Mixed feelings

I have to adapt myself again.

I'm flying back to KL tomorrow. So, my life and routines will be different again. I am a different person when I am in KL as the lifestyle tends to distinct your characters as well as to change your way of doing things. However, both places have its challenges and the beauty of it. You may decide where you prefer the most.

He is so cute!

----->

From "Terkejut" looks to "Another shot please!I love smiling at the camera!'Cause Lenglui is taking my picture, so I must smile, must smile~ ~"
"Mummy, shhhhh...don't bother me.I almost get her handphone number liao..."

The past, the present and the future

I have been enjoying myself in Kuching for almost three weeks. It's almost time for me to go back KL to sit for exam. In fact, these three weeks holiday were not exactly holiday for us. It was a combination of Raya Holiday + Study break. But I realised that I tend to "emerge" my study break into my Raya Holiday. I was holding my notes in front of the TV and reading it at the same time; (Mind you, I am clever at musti-tasking)...But at the end of the day, I could not piece up what I was studying!Haha.

I was determined to wake up at 7 am every day for the first few days after I came back. I woke up early in the morning to break fast or to savour the first meal of my day. I went out at 730am one Saturday morning to eat breakfast with my brother. (the emphasis here is Saturday morning ok)We were so proud of ourselves as we were surrounded by OLDER people - people with families and we became the centre of attraction. "Jun, we are outstanding and healthy youngsters uh?Suddenly,I feel fresh, young and rejuvenated!" It's true, i couldn't see anyone younger than 30 except both of us. Well, don't ask me since when I practise myself to get up so early because tell you the truth, it only lasts for three days!Haha.

Anyway, I am really glad that I had a chance to meet my friends during the holiday whom we never contacted each other after Form 5. (guess who are those friends?Check it out in my friendster!http://friendster.com/
) We had a small gathering and a small and simple BBQ. It was so touched to see all of us gathered together and talked about the past, the present and the future.

The Past:

"You lah, always hide behind me, sleeping in Puan Yu's class!"
"Where is she?Aiyo, she always looks back gracefully and roguishly when you call her...beh tahan lah
"Aiti, she never noticed you sleeping in her class but always calls my name!so unfair!I know you were Ketua Pengawas mar that time..."

The Present:

"Gals, you look different!"

"So do you!"

"Thanks, I take that as a compliment.Hehe"

The Future:

"Will you work in Kuching or where?"

"I wanna save some money first then go travel next year!"

A: Like being a doctor, lawyer...

Black Pea: Do you mean teaching is not a profession?and not as PROFESSIONAL as doctors and lawyers? (Note: was trying to get more explicit opinion and not trying to sound offensive)

Discouse and Pragmatics

I would like to share part of the interesting subject that I have learnt this semester. The subject is called “Discourse and Pragmatics”. This is an interesting subject that I started to be observant and analytical. This is a language related subject and that means this subject discusses language and its relation with other aspects that have closed relationship with language. It becomes more fascinating when you start to analyze the language used in every day communication and the language choice used in social life. I will try to make it as simple as possible so that it is understandable.

Before I go into details, I am sure that most of you might wonder what discourse means and what pragmatics means. Basically, discourse means the process of language in use whereas pragmatics means the study of linguistic forms and the users of these forms. In other words, it is something to do with how language works in our daily communication as well as how language used to imply meanings.

There are five models that have been done by linguists and anthropologists. I am not going to elaborate on the theories but I will briefly state what the models are: Speaking Grid, Ethnography of communication, Speech Act Theory, Conversational Analysis (CA) and Discourse Model (DA).

Language is a part of culture sharing. When you are interacting with other participants or interlocutors, you are actually sharing your cultures with them. You actually exchange your cultural values with your friends and at the same time; gain what they try to bring up in the social setting itself. However, linguistic realizations are culturally bound. For example, in India, the expressive speech act of “praising” and “congratulating” a person on their appearance can be realised by the words “Wow, how fat you are!” because weight is an indicator of prosperity and health. Try and see how your friend reacts if you express that here?

In the interaction, we tend to share many things without realizing it. The talk that we are having in the interaction is, in fact, unscripted or what we call spontaneous. There are two types of acts that I learnt during social communication in the social setting – Direct and indirect Speech Acts. Let me give you some examples:

You are in the bus and the bus is very crowded. Someone shouted at you,“You are stepping on my foot!” What will you say or do? Will you say “Oh yes, I’m stepping on your foot.” And you are still stepping on her/his foot. Or you step backward and say,” sorry”? This is what we call Indirect Speech Act. This is a simple example that I can elicit from our daily experience.

Another example is that:
A guy is trying to ask a girl out for a date.
A: I just bought two movie tickets. I’m thinking to watch a movie tonight but…I will be alone
B: Oh I see.
A: So what do you think I can do with the other ticket?
B: I can go with you.
A: Great! I will pick up at 8pm.
Read the same situation but different example below:
A: I just bought two movie tickets. I’m thinking to watch a movie tonight but…
I will be alone.
B: Oh I see.
A: So what do you think I can do with the other ticket?
B: (Long pause) maybe you can go with your sister.
A: (Upset looks) Ok…

Language is very powerful. We often use language to imply meaning instead of understanding the surface meaning. The words that we use do not serve to convey the real meaning. Therefore, language is indeed powerful if the intentional meaning is read and could be understood. Another interesting fact is that either short pause or long pause is full of meanings. The hearer tends to have long pause when he or she is thinking what to say or trying to rephrase what he or she wanted to say or another reason could be he or she wanted to reject the speaker’s invitation but he or she could not find a right word to convey his or her intention.

So guys and girls, be smart in your every day communication. Language is a tool to serve many purposes in your every day communication and it can kill!

How can it kill?

“I love you”
“Here is my heart and soul. Will you make a recipe of happiness of it?”
“My, that finger of yours looks rather bare…”

I guess you know better than I do.

"Please remain in your seats and you may switch on your handphones when you are in the terminal..."
This is so GREAT!I murmured to myself.
I was smiling gleefully in the plane.I am back home again! It has been a few months that i was away from home.Although it was only several months, Kuching has been developed in terms of road conditions, new fly-overs, highways, shopping malls and cafes. One thing that surprises me was the different car plat numbers on the roads. What i mean here is that i saw many cars from "outside" the areas of Kuching e.i cars from Sibu,Miri,Bintulu,Sarikei and even some from West Malaysia.Another phenomenon that seldom occurs in Kuching is traffic congestion.I tell you guys, Kuching started to jam!Roads have been widened and more traffic lights have been built up.
And the most happening place in Kuching that i found out is 4th mile especially those three cafes centered in 4th mile - Daydream, Isabella and B.O.P.That's so so amazing. The most unbelievable thing is when i saw more than 10 sport cars parking in front of The Banquet!I could not name what kind of sport cars they are but for sure they are sport cars ok. ahem.To show my knowledge on cars, i recognize one - skylines!OK, you can say I am a damn "sakai" but i don't care.I was really stunned.Don't mention about the drivers, looking at the cars has already made me feel damn good!haha.I really wonder where on earth do they come from?

Hmmm, don't judge a book by its cover... BUT by his CARS!Haha.
